22: CJSS co-organized with the Eurasia Department’s Center on Middle
East Studies the conference “The Middle-East’s Near Future.” The same
day, SASS celebrated the 50th anniversary of study of Judaism
and presented in a plenary session a monograph. Zhu Wen from the
Shanghai Office of the Beijing Gui’an Consultancy.

8: Prof. Wang Yuwei, Dean of the Center for Immigration Research at
Taiwan’s Central Police University, visited the center and was welcome
and treated to dinner by Dean Prof. Pan Guang. Hai Liang, Director of
the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences’ Office for Taiwan, Hong Kong
and Macao Affairs, Deputy Dean Zhou Guojian, and colleagues from the
Shanghai Municipal Government’s Taiwan Affairs Office attended.

2: Dr. Maria Klawe, President of Harvey Mudd College (Part of Clairmont
Colleges, California) visited the Academy of Social Sciences Shanghai
and gave a talk on “The Use of Humanities and Social Sciences in
Training Leaders in High-Tech and Economics.” SASS Acting Associate Dean
Zuo Xuejin attended the talk, which was chaired by CJSS Dean Prof. Pan
Guang.

31: Martin B. Gold, Member of the U.S. Commission for the Preservation
of America’s Heritage Abroad, visited the center to discuss matters
relating to the commemorative events to be held for Ho Fengshan in June
in Shanghai. Yao Zong from the city’s Foreign Affairs Office
participated in the meeting.

25: Leo Gleser, President and Founder of International Security and
Defense Systems Ltd (ISDS) visited the center on invitation. He gave a
presentation at the seminar on “Security and the Olympics,” which was
jointly organized with the Shanghai International Culture Association.

14: French television interviewed Dean Prof. Pan on several questions
relating to Jews in Shanghai. The same day, Overseas Chinese Dr. Wei
Zhenwei from the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya (IDC) was welcomed by
Deputy General Secretary Wang Zhen to the center.

13: The daughter of Mr. Maurice Ohana, President of the Jewish Community
Shanghai, celebrated her wedding at the Ohel Rachel Synagogue in
Shanghai. Dean Prof. Pan Guang, Deputy Dean Zhou Guojian, International
Programs Office Program Officer Xu Jia and others attended the ceremony.

12: On invitation from the center, Dr. Boaz Ganor, Director and Founder
of the International Policy Institute for Counter-Terrorism and a
notable counter-terrorism expert, spoke on invitation from CJSS on
“International Counter-Terrorism Cooperation and Security at the
Olympics.” Dean Prof. Pan Guang and Deputy Dean Yu Jianhua chaired the
seminar. Israel’s Consul General in Shanghai, Uri Gutman, attended the
seminar.

4: CJSS held a special meeting to celebrate the 50th
anniversary of the founding of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences.
At the event, CJSS’s newest book was presented, which is the second
volume of the CJSS Jewish & Israeli Studies Series. The book also
marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the
center.

3-4: Rabbi Abraham Cooper, Associate Dean of the Los Angeles based Simon
Wiesenthal Center (a Jewish organization with international reach) and
an old friend of CJSS, visited the center. Deputy Dean accompanied Rabbi
Cooper on a visit to Jewish sites in Shanghai and Dean Prof. Pan held a
working meeting with the guest. Deputy Secretary Generals Wang Zhen and
Wang Shuming participated in the meetings. Deputy Dean Yu Weidong and
Executive Secretary Liu Jinqian welcomed Rabbi Cooper at the airport.

26: Ms. Lital from Tel Aviv University’s (Israel) East Asia Department
came to CJSS to carry out research. Deputy General Secretaries Wang
Shuming and Wang Zhen welcomed her at the center and held talks with
her.

1: CJSS invited organizations responsible for the Jewish historic sites
of Shanghai to a symposium marking the Chinese New Year, thanking them
for the support of the work of the center and discussing with them ides
to further cooperation. This was followed by a dinner hosted for the
guests by Dean Prof. Pan Guang and Deputy Dean Zhou Guojian.

29: The Center of Jewish Studies held its annual end-of-year meeting.
Dean Prof. Pan delivered the annual report. At the meeting, the planned
work for the next year was discussed.

27: Receipt of a letter from Israeli Prof. Aron Shai, a China expert
currently on a research visit to the U.S., inquiring about information
on Jews in Shanghai during WW II.

25: Rosanne Lapan from the American Jewish Committee (AJC) Seattle
(Washington State) Chapter and Joseph J. Borich, Executive Director of
the Washington State China Relations Council and former U.S. Consul
General in Shanghai, visited the centre. Dean Prof. Pan briefed the
guests on the research and international cooperation of the centre. Both
sides exchanged views on potential cooperation. Deputy Deans Wang Jian,
Zhou Guojian, Deputy Secretary General Wang Shuming and other CJSS
researchers attended the meeting.

14-17: Dean Prof. Pan Guang traveled to Madrid, Spain, to attend a
United Nations Alliance of Civilizations meeting.

11: American Jewish Committee (AJC) Asia-Pacific Institute Director
James R. Busis visited CJSS. Dean Prof. Pan Guang introduced the
research focus of the center and talked about international exchanges at
CJSS. Mr. Busis expressed the hope for cooperation between the two
institutions. CJSS Deputy Dean Wang Jian and Deputy Secretary General
Wang Shuming attended the meeting amongst others. The American Jewish
Committee was established in 1906 and is one of the most influential
Jewish organizations in the U.S.A.

2: Dean Prof. Pan and Deputy Dean Zhou Guojian met with Dr. Daniel
Dratwa, Director of the Jewish Museum of Belguim. Deputy Dean Zhou
accompanied Dr. Dratwa on a tour of Jewish sites in Shanghai.

Yunqiu of East China Normal University visited CJSS to discuss matters
relating to cooperation.

27: Guo Chonglun, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of

Guang. They engaged in an exchange on inter alia matters of

18: Prof. Alain Goldschläger, Director of the Holocaust Literature
Research Institute and Deputy Director of the French Department, both at
Western Ontario University, visited the center and gave a lecture. The
meeting was chaired by Deputy Dean Yu Weidong. Deputy Secretary General
Wang Shuming accompanied Prof. Goldschläger to the Jewish sites of
Shanghai.

11: Ms. Judith Weissbach, a doctoral student at the University of Jewish
Studies in Heidelberg, Germany, visited the center and discussed issues

9: Slovakia’s Consul General in Shanghai Igor Pacolák visited the Centre
of Jewish Studies Shanghai. He was warmly welcomed by Dean Prof. Pan
Guang and several of CJSS’s
research fellows. Consul General Pacolák introduced the Institute of
Jewish Studies at Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia, and
expressed hope for cooperation between the institute and CJSS. Huang
Renwei, Vice President of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences and Li
Yihai, Director of the Foreign Affairs Office at the academy, met with
the Consul General.

6: Prof. Nathan Glazer of Harvard University, a co-founder of the
original neo-conservative movement and noted theorist, gave a lecture on
“Origins and Perspectives of Neo-Conservatism” at the Academy of Social
Sciences Shanghai. Dean Prof. Pan Guang chaired the event.

3: 102-year-old American-Jewish noted philanthropist Kathryn Davis lead
a group that visited CJSS.

invitation from CJSS. She held a talk on “The Russian Jews in Shanghai.”

26: A group of South African Jews visited CJSS. Dean Prof. Pan gave a
presentation on the "Jews in China." It was the first time that Jews
from South Africa visited the center.

19: A delegation from Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Institute of
International Studies expressed the wish to invite CJSS scholars to
conduct research on the Iranian Jewish community.

16: Prof. Helmut Kramer from the University of Vienna (Austria) visited
the center with his assistant and held talks with Deputy Secretary
General Wang Jian and Mr. Dominik Holter, serving Austrian Holocaust

introduced the guest to the history and current situation of Jews in
China. The talk was attended by Deputy Dean Zhou Guojian and other CJSS
researchers. Prof. Owen introduced the work of his center and presented
a number of relevant books as a gift to the center.

9: Moshe Dunie. President of the Seattle Chapter (Washington State) of
the American Jewish Committee (AJC) and President of Dunie Investments,
visited CJSS and met with Dean Prof. Pan Guang.

7: A group comprising representatives both from the Israel-China
Friendship Association and from the Association of Former Residents of
China in Israel visited CJSS under the leadership of Vice-Chairman Ran

2: Dean Prof. Pan visited Free University Brussels (Belgium). He was
invited to give a lecture on “Jews in China.” The lecture was attended
by Israel’s Ambassador to Belgium, along with other officials and
university leadership.

28: Dean Prof. Pan attended a series of events held in city of Yiyang
(Hunan province) to commemorate Dr. Ho Feng Shan, the former Consul
General of China in Vienna, who passed away 10 years ago. Prof. Pan went
on invitation from the Yiyang municipal government. Prof. Pan was
invited to give a talk, at which municipal (Yiyang) and provincial
(Hunan) leaders were present, as well as Israel’s Ambassador to China,
H.E. Amos Nadai.

25: Itzhak Shoham, Director of the North East Asia Division of the
Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, visited the Center of Jewish
Studies accompanied by Israel’s Consul General to Shanghai, Uri Gutman.
Dean Prof. Pan Guang and Deputy Dean Wang Jian welcomed the guests and
hosted a dinner in their honor.

21: Several American and Kazakhstani participants of the “8th Conference
of Central Asia & Shanghai Cooperation Organization” visited the centre.

14: A delegation from the Czech Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Modern
History visited CJSS to discuss continued cooperation on materials
relating to Czech Jews who fled to Shanghai during World War II.

25-26: A national conference "Dialog of Civilizations and Development in
Middle East" was held in Shanghai. The symposium was co-sponsored by the
Chinese Association of Middle East Studies, the Institute of European &
Asian Studies at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, Shanghai
Society for World History, and the Shanghai Center for International
Studies. All of CJSS’ researchers attended the conference.
August
10: Noam Narbach, an Israeli scholar who teaches Hebrew at Shandong
University visited CJSS, where he met with Deputy Secretary-General Wang
Jian for informal discussions.

8: A group of American teenagers of Chinese origins touring China on a
"Journalism and Leadership" summer camp visited CJSS and joined a
lecture by Prof. Pan Guang on "The Jews in China."

25 - 26: Prof. Yom Tov Assis, a expert on Jewish History from Hebrew
University of Jerusalem visited the CJSS. Deputy Secretary-General Wang
Zhen met him at the center.

26: Following a suggestion by the Chinese Consul General in New York,
well-known American businessman Mark Rosenblatt and his wife, Ms Sarah
Stern, Business Director of "Commentary" - the most influential
publication within the American Jewish community -, visited CJSS and
were hosted a dinner by Prof. Pan Guang.

19: Former US Consul General in Shanghai and currently Deputy CEO of
Bridgestone America, Henry Levine, visited CJSS and held talks with
Prof. Pan Guang on matters concerning cooperation.

12: A distinguished group of American Jews, led by old friend of CJSS,
Rabbi Marvin Tokayer, visited CJSS. Prof. Pan Guang gave a lecture on
"The Jews in China." to the group.

10: Prof. Moshe Pelli, a renowned Jewish Studies expert and Director of
the Judaic Studies program at the University of Central Florida, visited
the CJSS and gave a lecture on the "American Hebrew Enlightenment."
Associate Dean of CJSS, Prof. Zhou Guojian chaired his lecture. Prof.
Pei Li engaged in an in-depth discussion of relevant questions. He was
also accompanied by Deputy Secretary-General of CJSS, Mr.Wang Zhen on a
tour of Jewish sites in Hongkou district.

Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, who was visiting Shanghai. They
engaged in discussions on topics of mutual interest.

29: Fred Rosenbaum, founder of Berkeley (California) based Lehrhaus
Judaica, visited CJSS. He gave a lecture on the Jewish, Chinese and
Japanese People of San Francisco and engaged in thorough exchanges with
this Center's scholars. Following the meeting, CJSS hosted a lunch
reception for Prof. Rosenbaum.
July
1-5: The 'Teaching the Holocaust' International Task Force Seminar was
held at Shanghai University. The event was jointly organized by the Task
Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance,
and Research, the London Jewish Culture Center (UK), the Department of
History of Shanghai University's College of Liberal Arts and the Center
of Jewish Studies Shanghai. The lectures at the seminar were given
internationally renowned scholars. The more than 70 participants -
lecturers, researchers and graduate students - came from universities
and research institutions. In the afternoon of July 1st, the visitors,
who came both from abroad and within China, visited CJSS, where Prof.
Pan Guang gave the opening lecture entitled "Holocaust Refugees in
Shanghai." After the meeting, Associate Dean Zhou Guojian and Deputy
Secretary-General Wang Zhen accompanied the attendees on a visit to
Hongkou, the site of the former Designated Area for Jewish Refugees. In
the morning of July 2nd, the seminar was ceremoniously opened in the
presence of the American and Israeli Consul Generals as well as the
leaders of Shanghai University, who expressed congratulations. Dean Pan
and Associate Dean Zhou attended the opening ceremony and also
expressed congratulations. CJSS’ researchers and graduate students
attended the seminar. They listened to the lectures and actively
participated in the discussions.

Wang Zhen attended a forum held by Israeli Foreign Ministry
Director-General Aharon Abramovitch's delegation at Le Royal Méridien
Shanghai. Ten experts on Middle Eastern Affairs from Shanghai attended
the event. The participants engaged in a deep discussion of the critical
issues concerned.

15-17: The "Third Forum on The History of Harbin Jews" was held in
Harbin. It was sponsored by the Heilongjiang Province's People's
Government and jointly organized by the Heilongjiang Academy of Social
Sciences and the Israeli Embassy in China. CJSS’ Associate Dean Zhou
Guojian and Wang Jian participated by invitation. Both gave lectures at
the forum, among other topics on Jewish Commercial Activities in China
and on Jews in China after World War II. In interviews with Xinhua's
Heilongjiang Branch and Heilongjiang TV, Wang Jian expressed his
observations on Jewish commercial activities in China in recent years.

10: The first volume of "CJSS Jewish & Israeli Studies Series" has been
published. It is entitled The Jews in Asia: Comparative Perspectives.

31: Martin B. Gold, Member of the United States Commission for the
Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad and a senior adviser to the
U.S. State Department on matters of preservation of America’s heritage
abroad, visited CJSS. With members of this Center he discussed matters
relating to the commemoration of He Fengshan, to be jointly hosted in
2008 by the US and Chinese governments. The China Association for
International Friendly Contact will host the event on behalf of the
Chinese side. CJSS will organize the event. The Shanghai Academy of
Social Sciences' Vice-Party Secretary and the Center of Jewish Studies'
Honorary Dean Tong Shijun met with Mr Gold. Prof. Pan Guang discussed
the specific matters related to the event with Mr Gold. CJSS's Associate
Dean Zhou Guojian accompanied Mr Gold on a visit to the Ohel Rachel
Synagogue and the former Hongkou Jewish Refugee Ghetto, among other
places.

25: Prof. Pan Guang, in New Zealand on the occasion of the high-level
"Alliance of Civilizations" symposium, visited the New Zealand Jewish
Community Center. Steven Goldman, Chairman of the New Zealand Jewish
Council, accompanied Prof. Pan Guang on visits to, among others, a
Synagogue and a Jewish school. They also explored areas of possible
cooperation.

24: At a "Alliance of Civilizations" high-level symposium held in
Auckland, New Zealand, New Zealand's Prime Minister Helen Clark met with
Dean of CJSS, Prof. Pan Guang.

15: Chairman of the Australian Jewish Chamber of Commerce Sam Moshinsky,
who lived in Shanghai prior to 1949, and Professor Leon Mann from The
University of Melbourne (Australia) visited the Center. Dean Pan Guang
hosted a lunch banquet in their honor. Associate Dean Zhou Guojian, Wang
Jian and others helped entertaining the guests of honor.

28th: The East Asia Library manager of the University of Pittsburgh, Dr.
Xu Hong, visited our Center discussing future cooperation concerning
books and reference materials.

24th-27th: Shanghai Rickshaw Reunion 2006: Many activities were carried
out by former Jewish refugees during their visit to Shanghai.

20th: Prof. Pan Guang met the Chairman of the German Green Party
Reinhard Bütikofer and his wife for dinner. They discussed studies and
aspects of Holocaust research and planned to cooperate on related
subjects.

18th: Rainbow Oralis region outside management Director Chen Jian and a
delegation of our Center discussed plans on applying for the UNESCO
World Cultural Heritage program with the former designated area of the
Jewish refugees in Hongkou.

Richard Trappl, visited our Center to discuss the development of the
cooperation between the University of Vienna and our Center related to
Jewish studies.

4th: Principal Prof. Aaron Ben-Ze’ev from the University of Haifa in
Israel visited our Center to discuss details about further cooperation.

3rd-11th: The Dean of our Center, Prof. Pan Guang, visited Hawaii and
Pittsburgh in the USA. In Hawaii, Prof. Pan was introduced to the
Hawaiian Governor Linda Lingle and the US Pacific Special Operations
Command Major General David P. Fridovich (both are Jewish) bringing them
his picture album “The Jews in China” as a gift. In Pittsburgh, Prof.
Pan gave an academic lecture about the Jews in China at the University
of Pittsburgh and has presented his recent work to the University
library. He also gave an autograph session of his three works at the
University of Pittsburgh East Asia library.

29th: The old friend of our Center, Rabbi Marvin Tokayer, led a Jewish
museum delegation to visit our Center expanding the Sino-Jewish
exchanges. The group was mainly composed of American museum directors
and museum supporters.

26th: The National Director of the American Anti-Defamation League
(ADL), Abraham Foxman, led a delegation of the ADL visiting China. The
delegation and our Center held a seminar about “Jews in China” at the
Portman Ritz-Carlton Hotel with a lecture of our Center’s Dean Prof. Pan
Guang. Mr. Fox followed him, making some remarking commentaries about
Chinese-American friendship, also speaking on behalf of Ms. Yang Xuelan.
The lecture was followed by a question and answer session and a warm
discussion about various aspects of political issues concerning Jews.

25th: A group of Jewish Frenchmen visited out Center and listened to
Dean Pan Guang who gave a lecture about the “Jews in China”.

20th: Dr. Rina Zviely, Director of the friendship association at the
University of Haifa in Israel (equal to a Director of Foreign Affairs)
visited the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences and our Center.

9th: Dr. Du Xiaofan, Beijing project official of the United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), came to
Shanghai to inspect the original Hongkou Jewish refugee area for the
application for the UNESCO Cultural Heritage program for war areas. Dr.
Du and Dean Prof. Pan Guang met in order to discuss questions concerning
political issues of the Hongkou Jewish refugee area and later had dinner
together.

6th 2006: Former high rank official at the Austrian Ministry of Science,
honorary professor at the University of Vienna and the University of
Innsbruck, and son of Jewish refugee who came to Shanghai before World

March
3rd, the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences and Austrian General
Consulate Shanghai held the opening ceremony of the Bertha von Suttner
Exhibition in the Ohel Moishe Synagogue in Hongkou District. Prof. Pan
introduced on the initiation of the Austrian Holocaust Memorial Service
at the Center of Jewish Studies Shanghai, mentioning Martin Wallner as
the first young Austrian volunteer in the Center. Vice President of the
SASS Xiong Yuezhi spoke in his keynote speech about the importance of
Bertha von Suttner and Dr. Raol Kneucker, an Austrian professor at the
University of Vienna and Innsbruck.

1st, Japanese visiting scholar Sekine Maho began his research at the
Center.
February
28th, En Passant filmmaker Rudi Fieldgrass visited the Center.
February
21st, Hideo Nakamura, pastor in a Beth Shalom, and Nobuyuki Fujimoto
visited the Center. Related to the Japanese Holocaust Center in Kyoto,
they highly regretted during their discussion with Prof. Pan what had
happened to the Chinese due to Japan’s militarism during the
Sino-Japanese War.
February,
Specialists examined the Jewish Studies Project and concluded that this
project was very fruitful and would be continued in the next 5-year plan
period.
January
24th, our Center celebrated the Chinese Spring festival.
January
20th, Director Seth Garz of the Israel-China Partnership in Innovation
visited the Center.
January
17th, Prof. Zhou presided over a meeting between Dr. Zhang Yanhua from
the Tonji University and our Center. The main topic was the progress of
the research program on the Jewish heritage in Shanghai.
January
16th, Mrs. Yang Xuelan, chairman of the Culture Institute of the
American 100 Committee, met Prof. Pan on exchanging their ideas about
cooperation between the two organizations.
January
12th, Prof. Pan was invited to give a lecture at the Shanghai division
of the China International Travel Service. The director of the division
and around 200 tour guides listened to his speech about Jewish culture
and Jews in Shanghai.
January
5th 2006, Israeli Consul General of Shanghai Uri Gutman held a reception
to opening of the conference he organized about the future of the Middle
East. He also dedicated the opening to the celebration of the Chinese
Spring Festival. Around 20 scholars attended the conference including
the following SASS members: Vice President Zuo Xuejin, Vice President
Huan Renwei, Prof. Pan Guang, Prof. Li Lifan, Prof. Zhou Guojian and
also other scholars from Nanjing and Shanghai.
